Customs Clearance: Pre-Holiday Strategy for Importers
As April 7 arrives, we are exactly one week away from the peak of Songkran. For importers, this is "Golden Week." If your goods are arriving between now and April 13, you must act with speed to avoid expensive Demurrage and Detention (D&D) fees.
The Port Congestion Trap
During the holiday, the Customs Department operates on a "skeleton crew." While the ports remain physically open 24/7, the administrative processing of import permits and multi-agency approvals (like the FDA or Ministry of Industry) often comes to a halt.
Your 48-Hour Goal
Try to get all "Green Line" (low-risk) cargo cleared by the morning of Friday, April 10th. If your cargo is flagged for "Red Line" (physical inspection), ensure you are at the port with your broker today or tomorrow.
Financial Planning
Remember that banks also close. If your customs broker needs you to transfer funds for duties and taxes, do it before the bank holiday begins. Leaving cargo in a port warehouse for the 5-7 days of Songkran could cost your company thousands of dollars in unnecessary fees.
