Navigating 'Business Lunches' in Thailand
As we approach the end of H1, you will likely find yourself invited to many "recap" lunches with partners or major clients. In Thailand, food is the ultimate "Trust Accelerator."
The Seating Hierarchy
Usually, the most senior person (or the host) sits in the middle of the table, facing the door. If you are unsure, wait to be invited to a specific seat.
The Ordering Ritual
It is common for the host to order several dishes for the "Family Style" table.
- The Tip: Don't hesitate to try everything, but don't finish a dish completely—it can be interpreted as the host not providing "enough" food.
When to Talk Business?
In Thailand, the first 45 minutes of a lunch is for social bonding (Sanuk). Talking about "Hard Numbers" as soon as the appetizers arrive is considered aggressive. Wait until the coffee or the end of the main course. If the host brings it up earlier, follow their lead.
Who Pays?
The general rule in Thailand is that the Host (usually the most senior person or the one who made the invitation) pays for the entire table. Offering to "split the bill" (American Share) can actually cause a "Loss of Face" for the senior person. If you want to contribute, offer to host the next lunch.
