Mother's Day: Cultural Sensitivity & Office Holidays

Siam Advice FirmCulture Analysis

August 12th is a major public holiday in Thailand. It celebrates the Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, and is also the national Mother’s Day.

Office Etiquette

  • Blue is the Color: Blue is associated with the Queen Mother. Many of your staff will wear blue on this day or leading up to it. Encouraging a "Blue Shirt Day" in the office shows high cultural awareness.
  • Charity & Community: Many Thai people perform "Merit Making" (giving to charity) on this day. If your company donates to a local orphanage or mother-and-child foundation this week, it will be deeply appreciated by your team.

Operational Planning

  • Public Holiday Pay: Note that this is a mandatory public holiday. If you require staff to work (e.g., in your warehouse or customer service for the 8.8 aftermath), you must pay Double Time.
  • The Family Factor: For many of your staff, this is a day for traveling back to their hometown. Expect high request volumes for leave on Friday (August 14th) to create a "Super Long Weekend." If your production schedule allows it, granting this leave builds immense loyalty.

Professional Tip

Post a respectful "Happy Mother's Day" message on your company's social media and Line OA. In Thailand, showing respect for the monarchy and for the family is a cornerstone of brand trust.
